Fixed or variable rate: which to choose

A fixed rate guarantees the amount you receive if you send the exact amount in time. A variable rate is set when your deposit confirms and accepts any amount within the limits.

Updated

When you start a swap you choose how the rate is set. Either way, the swap form shows the rate, our spread and the network fees before you send anything.

Variable rate

  • The rate is set when your deposit has enough confirmations, from live prices at that moment. The amount shown beforehand is an estimate.
  • You can send any amount between the minimum and the maximum shown on your order.
  • The order stays open for 3 days and accepts up to 5 deposits. Each deposit is priced on its own.
  • You do not pay the extra charge for locking a rate.

Fixed rate

  • You get a quote first. It is valid for 5 minutes, so create the order before it runs out.
  • Send the exact amount shown on the order within 30 minutes. The amount you receive is then guaranteed.
  • If your deposit is off by 1% or less, we still complete it at the locked rate and adjust the payout in proportion. If it is further off, we refund it.
  • A fixed-rate order takes one deposit. A second deposit is refunded.
  • Locking the rate costs 0.3% more, because we carry the risk of prices moving while you send.

Which one to pick

Pick a fixed rate when you need a known amount at the other end, for example to pay someone, and you send from a wallet where you control the exact amount.

Pick a variable rate when you send from an exchange that may take its withdrawal fee out of the amount, or when you are not sure how long your transaction will take.

Timing on a fixed-rate order

What counts is when your transaction first appears on the network, not when it confirms. A deposit that appears after the order has expired is refunded, minus the network fees and a handling fee (see fees). If it appears in time but confirms more than 30 minutes after the order expired (or twice the network's usual time, if that is longer), you get the lower of the locked rate and the rate at that moment.
